VIDEO: Downtown Minneapolis LRT vs vehicle crash
By Crime Watch, March 21, 2023
Crime Watch reported about 9:20 p.m. Monday, March 20, 2023, about a vehicle vs LRT crash in downtown Minneapolis at 5th Street and Park Avenue.
Dispatch audio indicated that the train struck the vehicle and pushed it down the track where it became pinned between two trains.
Dashcam video of the moment of the crash was later posted by a Reddit user. The intersection shown is actually 5th Street and Portland Avenue with the vehicle travelling southbound on Portland as it approached 5th Street.
The video shows the vehicle approaching the intersection as the traffic light turns yellow. It appeared that the driver of the vehicle may have seen the train at the last minute and turned the wheel, but it was too late.
The traffic light turned from yellow to red just as impact was made between the vehicle and the train.
The train’s horn sounded, and it appeared the train’s brake was immediately applied but the impact pushed the vehicle down the track and into another train that was stationary and facing the opposite direction of the impacting train.
The person required extrication from the vehicle.
Further dispatch audio indicated that a 38-year-old male was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. At least four others were treated or hospitalized with what sounded like minor or not life-threatening injuries.
