Shots fired in Minnetonka, subsequent stand-off ends peacefully
By Crime Watch MN, Jan. 21, 2023
Crime Watch reported Saturday that multiple law enforcement agencies and medical responders were dispatched just after 11 a.m. to an apartment complex in Minnetonka on a report of multiple shots fired. There was also an initial report of a shooting, according to dispatch audio.
Initial dispatch audio indicated that “50–60” rounds had been fired by an individual from an apartment window near West 34th Street and Oak Ridge Road, and that residents had been evacuated from the building. Negotiators responded and tactical teams staged nearby. Audio indicated the male was taken into custody just after 12:30 p.m.
Minnetonka police later released the following statement:
Minnetonka police officers took a man into custody Saturday afternoon following reports of shots fired at an apartment complex. The initial 911 call was received prior to 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 21.
As officers arrived on the scene, they could hear multiple rounds of gunfire and evacuated residents from nearby apartments at 10233 34th St. W. The man barricaded himself inside an apartment and spoke with police negotiators before peacefully surrendering prior to 1 p.m.
There were no injuries reported. The incident remains under investigation. Officers were assisted by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department as well as the Hopkins, Eden Prairie, Edina and St. Louis Park police departments.
A resident of the apartment building contacted Crime Watch and provided the following statement:
We live near the apartment where this occurred. Shooting started at around 10am. About 12–15 shots were fired (not 50–60). The shooter was yelling out of his apartment and throwing paper out of the hole he broke on his window. He claimed he shot rounds into the air because he “needed help”. We could also hear him yelling about conspiracy theories surrounding Bill Gates. This was clearly someone experiencing a mental health emergency. The police say that the situation has been resolved. So sad 😞
