Vehicle windows smashed out in south Minneapolis

By Crime Watch MN, Oct. 23, 2022

Over a dozen vehicle windows were reportedly shattered early Sunday morning in Lake Nokomis neighborhoods of south Minneapolis, apparently by culprits firing a BB or pellet gun while driving down the streets.

Police began responding to reports after 9 a.m. on the 5100 block of 29th Avenue South. At one point, an officer requested another squad to help with reports because he said “about 40 vehicles” had been damaged.

After we posted about the police response, followers on our 3rd Precinct Crime Watch page began posting pictures, messaging and commenting.

Vehicle window damaged by apparent BB gun fire

“Several windows were completely spidered like that photo, the minute you touch it or bump the car it just crumbles away completely😩,” one person said.

A security camera video was posted online which was reported to be from incidents on one block. In the video, a car can be seen driving down the block and several popping sounds are heard. Glass or some object can be seen falling from a vehicle parked on the street after the moving vehicle passed.

One follower who commented indicated that the damage occurred between 3 and 4 a.m.

Another person messaged that they saw up to 25 cars damaged.

“I live on the 5100 block of 29th. My car window was shot out. It looks like they went down the street going south from 50th to 52nd shooting windows with a BB gun. I have video from the incident from a neighbor as well. I’d say about 20–25 cars were hit,” they said.

Another follower posted, “I went down 29th. All drivers side windows. Completely smashed out. I doubt it was a BB gun. (It apparently was.) Looks like they stopped or turned on 50th or came in from 50th.”

Another person posted that a vehicle window had been smashed out in the Corcoran neighborhood (top photo), which is several blocks north of the other incidents near Lake Nokomis. It’s unknown if all the incidents are related.

Police later told media that 14 vehicles had been damaged. We are working to get more clarity on the number of vehicles damaged.
