Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara

By Crime Watch MN, Aug. 7, 2023

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara announced on Monday several changes and additions to the Minneapolis Police Department’s command staff.

Last week, we told you that the city council approved the addition of two new deputy chief positions for the department and that the chief was planning additional command staff changes.

The chief subsequently announced that he was splitting the police department into two separate divisions or “bureaus”: the Bureau of Internal Affairs and the Bureau of Constitutional Policing.

In an unlisted video posted to the police department’s website Monday, the chief announced several changes, as follows, including the above two bureau deputy chiefs:

Inspector Katie Blackwell will become the Asst Chief of Operations

Chris Gaiters, Asst Chief of Community Trust

John Kingsbury, Deputy Chief of Patrol

Jason Case, Deputy Chief of Investigations

DeChristopher Granger, Deputy Chief of Internal Affairs

Travis Glampe, Deputy Chief of Constitutional Policing

Mark Montgomery, Deputy Chief of Professional Standards

Additionally, two changes were made to precinct command staff:

New 2nd Precinct Insp. Nick Torberg

New 5th Precinct Insp. Christie Nelson (Crime Watch had obtained an internal email Monday morning sent to staff by Chief O’Hara that announced Blackwell as Asst Chief and Lt. Mark Osland as the new 5th Precinct commander. We’re working to find out what changed between this morning and this afternoon on the 5th Pct pick of Nelson over Osland)

1st, 3rd, and 4th Precinct commanders will stay the same.

The chief says more changes will be coming in the next few weeks.
