Glass was shattered at 1410 Nicollet Avenue (submitted)

An apparent shootout took place on Nicollet Avenue in the Loring Park neighborhood of downtown Minneapolis in the early morning hours Wednesday.

A source told us that over 170 shell casings were recovered and that a building at 1410 Nicollet looked like “Swiss cheese.” (We did receive a photo of the crime scene showing dozens of police evidence markers in the street, but we were asked not to publish the photo).

We posted about 2:38 a.m. on an initial report of a shooting at or near the Nicollet Diner, which sits at the corner of 15th and Nicollet Avenue, according to police dispatch audio.

Police arrived in the area and didn’t immediately locate a shooting victim. However, police did detain a male who they indicated was captured on video firing a gun at the location. Police aired that they found a gun on him.

911 also received several reports of bullet damage to apartments at 1410 Nicollet, and at least one vehicle was reported to be damaged by gunfire. (Top photo shows shattered glass on the front of 1410).

Another follower sent a photo of a bullet in their wall. They said they live on the 17th floor of an apartment at Grant and Nicollet.

The dispatch audio at the time did not indicate the number of casings that had been found on site, but the photo we received was in daylight, indicating police were on scene until at least sun-up.

Dispatch audio indicated that a gunshot victim showed up in a cab to HCMC after 6 a.m. The dispatcher indicated it was related to the shots fired incident near 15th and Nicollet.

Several followers messaged that they were awakened by the shots.

One said:

“I woke up to da sound of lots and lots of bullets been fired i thought it was in my apartment. And i thought it won’t stop.”

Another said:

“It was so loud and crazy.”

Another said:

“Oh yeah I live there it happened all right 100%.”

As of 3 p.m., no local media outlets had appeared to report on the incident. But, that’s not surprising. The triple shooting with about 50 bullets fired on 5th and Hennepin Avenue early Saturday morning barely received a blip in MN media (the two that did report that three people were shot made no mention of the dozens of rounds fired and several buildings damaged), and Star Tribune didn’t report on it at all.
