Crime Watch reported that a man was found with gunshot wounds around 5:30 a.m. Friday, July 21, 2023, near 28th and Nicollet Avenue South in Minneapolis.

The initial dispatch to police was for a man down from a possible overdose. When police arrived, they found Narcan nearby but discovered that the person had at least one gunshot wound to the arm. Police stated that the male was not breathing, and CPR was in progress. They also noted that there was a blood trail in the area and requested crime scene tape be placed around the scene.

Further dispatch audio indicated that the approximately 35-year-old male was transported to the hospital with several gunshot wounds but that he was in cardiac arrest (asystole).

The Minneapolis Police Department released a statement later on Friday saying that the man had died as a result of his injuries. No arrests had been made at the time.

Crime Watch has since obtained surveillance video/audio reportedly from about 5:03 a.m. Friday near 28th and Lyndale Avenue South in which several bursts of automatic gunfire can be heard (top). According to dispatch audio at that time, several officers in the area reported hearing the sound of automatic gunfire, one from at least two miles away. There was also a Shotspotter activation for 11 rounds at the same time from 24th and Bloomington Avenue, again nearly two miles away.

Information was not immediately available on whether all the gunfire reports, the surveillance audio, and the Shotspotter activation were linked to the same events, and confirmation was not able to be obtained at this time on whether the automatic gunfire was connected to the homicide.

Crime Watch will continue to follow developments in the homicide, which we’ve tracked as number 32 for Minneapolis this year, and will update if a suspect is charged.
