UPDATE: Patrick Larenz Dembley was taken into custody late Thursday night, May 26. He reportedly turned himself in. Dembley remains in custody without bail. Next hearing June 7.

A gun used in a shooting outside a Northeast Minneapolis bar in May of last year has been forensically connected through matching shell casings to the murder of a six-year-old girl in north Minneapolis a week later, according to documents filed in Hennepin County court last year.

Patrick Larenz Dembley, 24, the man charged in the shooting outside Mayslack’s bar on May 11, 2021, is now on the run after pleading guilty in March in the bar shooting case and then failing to show up at sentencing earlier this month.

Dembley also has several other pending charges in other cases including illegal possession of a gun, fifth-degree assault and third-degree riot. Warrants have also been issued for his arrest in those cases.

The shooting outside Mayslack’s bar was captured on extremely clear and close video according to the criminal complaint. In the video, Dembley’s face and unique neck tattoo were visible, and officers were able to match the tattoo in the video of the shooting to another photograph of Dembley. The victim subsequently identified Dembley as the shooter after being presented with a photographic line up.

The victim had confronted Dembley and another man at the bar after hearing them talk about having jumped someone at the bar a few weeks prior. The victim’s co-workers had been assaulted at the bar a few weeks prior, so he decided to make a comment to Dembley and his friend asking if they like to jump people. In response, Dembley’s friend took a swing at the victim and the two tussled in the street briefly until Dembley removed a gun from his waistband and shot the victim twice. When Dembley first discharged the firearm, the victim was on the ground. Dembley then paused and shot the victim a second time, the charges state. Dembley and his friend fled the scene on foot.

Police surveilled and located Dembley on May 27, 2021, in a Maple Grove apartment parking garage of his child’s mother where they arrested him on warrants for the shooting and another case involving third-degree riot.

On the floor on the passenger side of the vehicle where Dembley had been seated, officers found a backpack containing a Glock 9mm semi-automatic firearm with an extended magazine inside. Dembley did not have a permit to carry a firearm, and he was subsequently charged in a new case with possessing a firearm without a permit.

MAYSLACK’S GUN CONNECTION TO A MURDER

About a week after Dembley’s arrest last year, KARE 11 reported (without naming Dembley) that a search warrant filed in Hennepin County had linked shell casing evidence found at the Mayslack’s shooting to shell casing evidence left at the scene of the shooting of six-year-old Aniya Allen several days later on May 17, 2021, at 36th and Penn Avenue North as she rode in the car with her family. Aniya had been shot in the head as the vehicle drove through the gunfire intended for another target, police said. She died within two days after being shot.

The report stated that Dembley was not cooperative with police when questioned about Aniya’s shooting. KARE 11 said that at the time the search warrant was issued, the gun used in the Mayslack’s shooting and Aniya’s murder had not been located. The gun Dembley was arrested with in Maple Grove was apparently not the gun in either shooting incident.

Dembley has not been charged in connection to Aniya’s murder, and his family claims he was on vacation in Las Vegas at the time of her shooting.

FAILURE TO APPEAR

Dembley had been free on bond since shortly after being charged last year in the Mayslack’s shooting case and the illegal gun possession case.

In March of this year, Dembley was offered a plea agreement in the Mayslack’s shooting case. He pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in exchange for dismissal of another charge on threats of violence. Sentencing details were not outlined in the plea agreement which indicated terms would be argued at the sentencing hearing.

Dembley was allowed to remain free to await sentencing despite pleading guilty in the case and also having other pending cases and charges including illegal gun possession.

Dembley was scheduled to appear at a scheduled sentencing hearing on April 27, 2022, in the Mayslack’s case but failed to appear. A warrant was issued for his arrest and his bond was forfeited. Dembley also failed to appear at hearings in two other cases scheduled on May 5 and 6 in Ramsey and Hennepin counties, respectively. Arrest warrants were issued and bonds forfeited in those cases, as well.

Dembley’s whereabouts are unknown. Contact 911 if you have information about his location.
