A Minneapolis man has been charged following a hit and run crash on Monday that killed a woman riding on a mobility scooter.

Suspect: Cameron Mikkel Bendson

Cameron Mikkel Bendson, 21, of the 2700 block of Bryant Avenue North, is charged with one count of criminal vehicular homicide (CVH) in the crash that killed Rosie Means.

Means was riding in her mobility scooter on West Broadway Avenue near Aldrich Avenue North when she was struck about 2:30 p.m.

Victim: Rosie Means

Bendson was arrested in St. Anthony on Tuesday, and he made his first court appearance on Friday. Bendson was granted a public defender, and as of late Saturday he remained in custody at Hennepin County Jail on $150,000 bail.

The charge of CVH means that Means will not be added to the list of Minneapolis homicides at this time. CVH is not counted by Minneapolis or St. Paul police in the homicide totals for either city.

It’s possible that additional charges could be added later that could include some degree of murder or manslaughter if prosecutors believe they can prove intent or culpable negligence by Bendson.

CRIMINAL HISTORY

Bendson has mostly petty misdemeanors and misdemeanors on his record.

Bendson was convicted on two felonies of auto theft and fleeing police in a motor vehicle in March 2020.

As we’ve explained on our social media accounts multiple times, offenders can steal upwards of 8 vehicles before ever being sent to prison under Minnesota’s sentencing guidelines (below).

As a result, Bendson received a stay of imposition in the auto theft and fleeing case and was given 5 years probation.

Following a court order in August 2021, Bendson was granted early discharge from probation by Ottertail County Judge Sharon Grewell Benson. Meaning he was no longer required to be supervised and his felony crimes were reduced to misdemeanors on the record, pursuant to MN 609.13.

COMMENTARY

This is how our system works. So, you can see that we definitely need criminal justice system reform on multiple levels, just not the kind that activists and the state/local regime pushes.
