‘It won’t be tolerated’… psssst, yes it will
By Crime Watch MN, Oct. 10, 2024
Crime Watch Minneapolis posted last Wed., Oct. 2, an initial report of a possible shooting at the Broadway Flats apartments at 2505 N Penn Avenue following reports of shots and screaming in the building, according to police scanner audio.
Police and deputies arrived, and one officer shouted over the air that someone was in the hallway armed with a gun and said to “hold the air.”
Within minutes, police determined no one had been shot, but said multiple people were being detained and there were multiple guns in the hallway.
Crime Watch later obtained a video clip that evening from a resident of the building that showed law enforcement running down the hallway of the apartment building while a chaotic scene unfolded. Someone could be heard saying, “he’s got a gun,” then police could be heard shouting “hands, hands up” and “get on the ground,” directed toward the alleged parties with the guns.
No follow up on the incident was immediately offered by the Minneapolis Police Department until today, over a week later, when MPD made a social media post about the incident.
The post described the incident saying police discovered “smoke, bullet holes, casings, and a gun lying on the floor of the hallway.” They saw two men pointing guns at three people on the floor, and the two were taken into custody. Witnesses told police that the incident started with a fight between two men when a third approached and tried to break up the fight. At that point, two of the men pulled out guns and fired multiple shots. The third man continued to struggle with one of the men over the gun when another bystander intervened and pointed his gun at the group while they were fighting.
The statement said that two of the men had been booked on probable cause second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, and the third man was booked for carrying a pistol without a permit.
A quote in the statement by Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said:
“I want to make it clear to all those who seek to use firearms to settle petty arguments and harm others: we do not stand for it, and you will be arrested. Every day, officers run toward danger not knowing what is around the corner. This incident demonstrates the incredible bravery of all police officers, and the incredible actions take every day to ensure the safety of the community. I am grateful that no one was seriously injured and we will seek accountability for the individuals who endangered the lives of the residents.”
Being the curious sorts that we are, we looked up the bookings from the time frame to see the arrested parties and the formal charges and whether the parties were still in custody.
To the surprise of no one, we found that none of the three arrested parties had been charged and all had been released from custody within 15 hours or less of being arrested. The jail records for all three noted that “36 hours” had expired. (You can view the arrested parties here: https://x.com/CrimeWatchMpls/status/1844489380184146390).
Of course, the decision to charge or not charge in this case falls on Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty. As in so many other incidents we’ve posted, Moriarty’s office routinely declines charges or under charges or offers egregious plea deals to violent offenders. But “crime is down,” y’all. Yes, crime stats are down when you don’t charge crimes.
Despite the fact that Minnesota “leaders” on every level profess to be tough on “gun violence,” we’ve proven the exact opposite, which we’ve documented on our growing list of gun crime offenders who’ve been slapped on the wrist; the list includes multiple gang members.
