Newly appointed Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara was patrolling downtown Minneapolis Wednesday night near 7th and Hennepin Avenue when he came upon a vehicle that was driving erratically and weaving through traffic.

An adult male exited the vehicle at a busy intersection and started brandishing and waving around a “replica assault weapon” at vehicles, MPD later said.

Dispatch audio at the time heard the chief calling out for back-up, and several squads responded.

Thursday morning, MPD posted a statement and photo on social media describing the incident saying the male was arrested and booked on “terroristic threats.”

MPD said in the Facebook post, “This type of behavior will not be tolerated.”

[Narrator voice] Apparently, it will be tolerated.

The arrested party was released from custody on Friday without charges. The jail record states: No probable cause found. Which means the Hennepin County Attorney declined to prosecute and/or some judge reviewed the incident and tossed it out.

Welcome to Minneapolis/Hennepin County, Chief. It’s only going to get worse.
