On Wednesday, Dec. 2, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced that Hennepin County would be removing bail requirements for 19 felony-level crimes charged in the county.

Please take 30 minutes and listen to the embedded press conference by Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman, Minnesota Attorney General Ellison and Washington County Attorney Peter Orput and you will realize what we’ve been saying for 10 years: Minnesota’s criminal justice system favors criminals over public safety.

These “prosecutors” have ZERO interest in prosecuting or holding criminals accountable to protect the public and limit future victims.

Listen closely and you’ll also hear them indicate that they wish to decriminalize even more criminal activity and hold even fewer people accountable.

Of equal or greater importance, hear what they’re NOT saying: They have ZERO regard for victims of crime, as if the costs, hardships and emotional burdens victims suffer don’t matter.

We’ve posted countless times about perpetrators who are out on low or zero bail committing new crimes and racking up new victims.

Just for perspective, Freeman says crimes on the list for zero bail, like auto theft, are “low level” crimes.

In 2019, about $6.4 billion was lost to motor vehicle theft (that’s not low level). The average dollar loss per theft was $8,886 (that’s not low level). Motor vehicles were stolen in the US at a rate of 219.9 per 100,000 people in 2019. In Minneapolis so far this year, auto theft is up over 73% over the prior 4-year average.

These costs are placed on victims and society and Freeman, et al, can just wash their hands of that by spinning perpetrators through the revolving door instead of taking responsibility.

Calculate the burden to the victims through lost work, lost deductible, insufficient insurance to cover the loss, increased insurance costs, emotional toll and everything else that goes along with being a crime victim — that’s not low level.

Protecting the PUBLIC is the ***number one job*** of these people and they are FAILING MISERABLY.
