Blaine, Minn., police report that an attempted traffic stop for failure to signal a sudden lane change led to the eventual arrest of a suspect who was in possession of nearly four grams of cocaine and had several warrants.

From Blaine PD:

On Saturday, March 16, 2024, at 11:56AM, an officer attempted to stop a car at 89th/University Avenue for a traffic violation. Rather than stopping, the driver fled. Due to heavy traffic, the speed of the fleeing vehicle, and the reckless driving by the vehicle, the officer deactivated his emergency lights and siren and did not pursue the vehicle.

A short time later, the driver of the same vehicle caused a minor accident on Hwy 65 by running a red light but continued driving without stopping. Officers began checking the area and located the empty vehicle in a parking lot nearby. Officers observed a male on foot exiting a business and then returning to the business when he saw police. In speaking with him, officers found his story wasn’t fitting and he provided a false name. They determined he was the driver, backing it up through CCTV video and finding the keys to the vehicle in his pocket. Officers found the individual had multiple felony warrants for his arrest and located 3.98 grams of cocaine on the individual.

Multiple officers assisted on this call to find the driver and verify information. Thanks to their persistence, communication, and thorough police work, this situation was quickly resolved.

The arrested party was Jeremy Scott Evenson, 41, of Bricelyn, Minn., now charged in Anoka County District Court with felony counts of fleeing police in a motor vehicle and 5th degree possession of a controlled substance, as well as a misdemeanor count of providing false information to police.

The complaint describes that the vehicle Evenson was driving was in a left turn lane at a stop light at 91st and University Avenue NE when a Blaine squad pulled up behind it. The vehicle then merged right and back onto southbound University Avenue without signaling. The officer activated lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but it took off at a high rate of speed.

Evenson and his vehicle were eventually located in Shoreview where he was taken into custody after providing a false name to police and officers discovering that he was wanted on warrants.

Evenson remains in custody at this time on $40,000 bail on the new charges, as well as holds on the active warrants out of Ramsey, Rice, and Washington counties (all three warrants for felony drugs).
