A downtown Minneapolis staple for feeding people in need went up in flames Wednesday night.

We first posted just before 10:30 p.m. that crews had been dispatched to a report of flames seen on the roof of a building, reported by Hennepin County security at a nearby facility.

The fire was first reported to be at the Caliber Collision building, but when crews arrived, they reported the fire appeared to be from the House of Charity building at 714 Park Avenue. The two structures share a common wall.

According to fire dispatch, crews made entry into the Caliber Collision building to confirm there was no extension inside that structure.

Photos provided to us by a follower show flames coming out of the roof of the House of Charity building.

The Minneapolis Fire Department tweeted that there were no reports of injuries. Before midnight they were still on site continuing to open up the roofline and set up an aerial water tower to extinguish the fire.

At this time there has been no official assessment of the cause of the fire or the extent of damage, but from appearances, the structure appears to be a significant loss.

Information on the House of Charity website states that up to 40% of people who dine at the facility may have that as their only source of food for the day. The facility feeds about 350 people a day.

We’ll update when more information becomes available.
