Over 150 shots were fired when a barrage of gunfire erupted in the area of a large gathering early Sunday morning March 20 in south Minneapolis, according to police.

We reported on Sunday about an overnight incident after 4 a.m. where police had reported shots being fired for an extended period of time in the area of East 25th Street and 25th Avenue South in the Seward neighborhood.

One officer aired that some of the shots were “fully auto,” meaning automatic gunfire.

Based on dispatch audio from the incident, it was apparent that police had already been positioned in the area, possibly due to the large gathering of people and vehicles they reported to be present in the area.

Police later released a statement to media that over 150 shots had been fired over ten minutes in a two-block area and that hundreds of vehicles and people had been present at the time. No injuries were reported.

We captured most of the police dispatch audio that took place while the incident was unfolding over at least 15 minutes.

At one point, apparent shots being fired could be heard in the background while police were airing information to the dispatcher. A sergeant aired that officers should just monitor activity and stay out of the area.

A sergeant requested “response cars” from other precincts and areas to respond to the scene, stating there were “multiple shooters” and “possibly fully auto” gunfire.

After the shots began and continued, police aired that vehicles were beginning to flee the area, and that they weren’t stopping at stop lights or stop signs and they urged other officers to be cautious.

After a full 15 minutes from the first dispatch, police called the situation under control and later aired that they had recovered spent shell casings from the area.

It hasn’t been uncommon for us in the last 20 months to hear about or report on after-hours gatherings or large parties taking place in commercial or residential properties in areas of Minneapolis. Anecdotally, it seemed there was a surge in that activity following the Covid-related lockdowns and restrictions placed on bars and entertainment venues.

Additionally, we reported on several other incidents over the weekend involving gunfire including a homicide on Friday in south Minneapolis, a group of three firing shots midday Friday near a Brooklyn Center shopping mall, two people shot at George Floyd Square on Saturday night, and shots fired inside the Muse Event Center resulting in one gunshot victim in downtown Minneapolis.
