Several robberies occurred in short succession in Southeast Minneapolis, Minn., in the early morning hours on Sunday, and one suspect possibly involved in two of the robberies was reported to have crashed at high speed on 35W, shortly thereafter.

One of the robberies reportedly occurred about 1 a.m. on the walking bridge near Van Cleve Park. The suspect robbed two people at gunpoint, and was described as a light skin black male, in a red puffer coat and dark pants, 5ft8–10, 150–170 lbs.

Minutes later, another robbery at gunpoint occurred near 8th Street SE and 13th Avenue SE. The suspect in that robbery was described as similar to the Van Cleve robbery suspect as a black male, 20s, 5ft10, red sweatshirt and black pants.

A third robbery was reported to be a carjacking of a black Honda CR-V, plate PHH213, on the 1100 block of SE 7th Street just before 1:30 a.m. by a black male in a black jacket. The dispatcher noted that the physical description was slightly different than the two prior robberies.

Within four minutes, the dispatcher aired that the carjacked vehicle had flipped on 35W near Johnson Street NE.

Robbery and crash locations

However, the plate aired for the crashed vehicle was different than the one aired from the prior carjacking. The vehicle reportedly flipped over the median from the northbound lanes and into the southbound lanes of 35W while traveling about 95–100 mph. Crime Watch posted traffic camera video from the immediate aftermath of the crash as responders arrived.

Police have since updated that officers attempted to stop the vehicle when it took off at a high rate of speed, which preceded the crash.

Later dispatches indicated that the suspect in the red puffy coat was in custody (it was implied that it was the person in the flipped vehicle), and that the suspect in the carjacked Honda CR-V was still at large.

The party in the flipped vehicle was reported to be an approximately 20-year-old male who had sustained a head injury in the crash, according to dispatch audio.

The Minneapolis Police Department did not issue any statements direct to the public on any of these incidents. However, KSTP has reported that the arrested party from the crash is Khalid Abdi Mahamud, age 20. A booking record is not yet available for Mahamud as he may still be hospitalized. Mahamud’s injuries are reported to be not life-threatening.

Crime Watch will update if any further information can be gathered or becomes available about any of the incidents.
