All three suspects in Columbia Heights homicide now in custody

The last of the three suspects wanted in connection to a late August homicide in Columbia Heights was taken into custody on Thursday.

Cashmere Quinton Smith, 21, Brandon Allen Kron, 22, and Dominic James Sampson, 20, have each been charged with one felony count of second-degree murder with intent for the Aug. 24 shooting death of Charles Mosby, 22, outside a convenience store on the 4600 block of Central Avenue Northeast. The counts against Smith and Kron involve aid/abet.

Just after 10:30 p.m. that Monday night, police were called to the location on a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Mosby, who had been shot several times. Mosby was transported to North Memorial hospital and was pronounced deceased after arrival.

According to the charging documents, the shooting was seemingly unprovoked.

Surveillance video from several area businesses captured the three defendants loitering around the business prior to the shooting. Smith was seen retrieving a firearm from a vehicle and passing it to Kron, who later passed it back to Smith.

Video captured Mosby’s arrival at the store around 10:15 p.m., where he exchanged “amicable” greetings with several people including Smith and Sampson, the complaint states.

Ten minutes later, video captured Kron handing the firearm to Sampson, who put the gun in his pocket.

Despite no apparent conflict captured on video, the complaint stated, Mosby turned to leave the area at about 10:33 p.m. when Sampson pulled the gun from his pocket and shot Mosby several times in the back at close range. The three defendants then fled in two different vehicles.

Kron was apprehended later the following day. Smith was booked into custody in Anoka County Jail on Thursday and Sampson was taken into custody earlier this week on late Tuesday night.

All three remain in custody in Anoka County Jail. Kron and Sampson have bail amounts listed at $500,000 and $2 million, respectively, and Smith has no bail amount listed at this time. Kron and Sampson have each been granted public defenders, and no attorney is yet listed for Smith.
